A new cultural landmark has taken shape in the heart of Shenzhen, with the Shenzhen International Performance Center making its public debut in Xiangmihu Subdistrict, Futian District.

As the final protective film was removed from the center's domed curtain wall, two gilded shell-shaped structures — one large and one small — were revealed. Partially enclosed within a glass box, the golden shells create a layered architectural composition in which one performance space appears to sit inside another, reflecting the concept of "a stage within a stage."

Located in the Xiangmihu New Financial Center, the Shenzhen International Performance Center is designed to become a world-class performing arts venue. Opera, musicals, traditional Chinese dance, ballet and other performances from China and abroad are expected to take the stage there, expanding Shenzhen's cultural offerings.

The project was designed by the internationally renowned architecture firm Ennead. With a total floor area of approximately 73,000 square meters, the new cultural landmark includes the "Dream Theater," with seating for around 1,800 people, as well as a 600-seat multifunctional performance space.

The center is expected to become operational in 2027.

CPAA Theatres has been commissioned by the Futian District Bureau of Culture, Radio, Television, Tourism and Sports to operate the cultural destination. The company will work with the center to bring in international productions and nurture local artistic talent. Drawing on its global network, CPAA Theatres plans to establish the venue as a platform for staging acclaimed international productions while supporting original works from Shenzhen.

The partnership between Futian and CPAA Theatres aims to foster two-way cultural exchange by bringing outstanding productions to Shenzhen and helping local artists and works reach international audiences. It is also expected to support young Shenzhen performers seeking international opportunities, encourage cooperation with leading arts organizations in China and overseas, and help develop original productions that reflect Shenzhen's distinctive character and Chinese artistic traditions.
